Since the early 90s, the main heroes of the Toy Story films have been Woody and Buzz Lightyear, who were initially rivals but eventually became friends. In the final scene of Toy Story 4, they separate; Woody stays with Bo Peep to assist lost toys, while Buzz stays with Bonnie and other toys. Toy Story 5 comes out on June 19, 2026, and it reunites them for a new adventure because technology is making Bonnie and her toys play in a different way.

With the arrival of Lilypad, a tablet in the form of a frog that focuses on digital interaction, there is a new challenge facing the toys. Bonnie becomes fascinated with the toy, making it difficult for traditional toys to get her attention. In the case of Buzz, it is no longer about fighting evil but about coming up with ways for the toys to have a purpose in childhood characterized by technology.
Woody and Buzz can meet again after Jessie and Bullseye disappear. Buzz decides to locate them while Woody comes back to help in the search. Thanks to their different experiences, they are both able to solve problems differently, thus working well as a team.
Although Woody and Buzz return as the central duo, Toy Story 5 gives them somewhat different functions from earlier installments. Buzz becomes directly involved in Jessie’s mission. When Jessie and Bullseye disappear, he refuses to leave them behind. Woody then joins the search, bringing the pair back together for another rescue mission.
