Dune: Part Three: What Will Happen in the New Movie?

Following the success of Dune: Part Two, the story of Paul Atreides will be continued in Dune: Part Three, which will be directed by Denis Villeneuve and produced on the basis of Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah. This film is expected to hit North American movie theaters on December 18, 2026. Unlike the previous films, the story moves forward significantly, with Paul already serving as Emperor. This upcoming film will feature fewer moments from the story about the ascent of Paul than the first part of the trilogy and will emphasize the effects of the reign of Paul, featuring the intrigues, conspiracies, love affairs, and even the fate of the Imperium.

1. What Will Happen in Dune: Part Three?

Paul Faces the Consequences of His Rise to Power

At the end of Dune: Part Two, Paul has finally defeated the champion of the Emperor, taken the throne, and accepted a political marriage to Princess Irulan. Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Paul’s problems have not ended yet. According to the official description of Dune: Part Three, Paul can already be found almost twenty years after seizing power and is reigning as an Emperor.

Paul’s perspective, accordingly, is very different from what it was in the first two films. He is no longer an outsider trying to survive on the planet Arrakis. Now, he has to manage a very big political structure while confronting his enemies who try to undermine his power. In addition to that, the major theme now is the question of how long a ruler can maintain his power when political power, religious power, and personal relations start pulling him apart.

The Political Conflict Expands Beyond Arrakis

The importance of Arrakis remains in its connection with the Fremen, the spice, and with Paul’s rise in power, but now the struggle goes beyond this desert planet. In accordance with the official synopsis of the film, there is political opposition from the houses that were displaced by the rise of Paul, and there is a conspiracy against Paul within his own empire. This provides a more general political story where it is not only about struggles for power on the planet Arrakis.

Chani and Paul’s Relationship Faces New Challenges

Chani is expected to remain one of the most important emotional elements of Dune: Part Three. The official movie site specifically identifies Chani as being at the center of the mystery surrounding the new conspiracy.

Her relationship with Paul is already complicated by the ending of Dune: Part Two. Paul chooses to marry Irulan for political reasons, while Chani rejects the idea of simply accepting his new imperial position. The third film can therefore examine the distance between Paul’s political responsibilities and his personal connection with Chani.

New Threats Begin to Emerge

Paul’s enemies are not limited to traditional military forces. The official cast includes Robert Pattinson as Scytale, while Jason Momoa returns in a new role connected to Duncan Idaho. The cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides and two younger characters, Leto II and Ghanima.

These additions suggest that the story will introduce new political and personal complications rather than simply repeat the conflicts of the previous movies. The exact details of those threats should remain partly open until the film is released.

2. Which Characters Will Return in Dune: Part Three?

Paul Atreides and His New Position

Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides. This time, the character is presented as an established Emperor rather than a young nobleman discovering his abilities. The official synopsis describes him as facing the consequences of his reign and the dangers created by his position. This change in status is important because Paul’s central conflict is no longer simply about gaining power. He now has to deal with what that power has created.

Chani and the Future of the Fremen

The actress Zendaya will play the character of Chani, who gets more attention because she is a link between Paul and the Fremen people. According to the official synopsis, her story becomes an important element in the growing mystery. Her character also provides a connection between Paul’s personal life and the wider consequences of his rule. The future of the Fremen and their relationship with Paul’s empire is likely to remain an important issue.

Princess Irulan and the Imperial Family

In addition to this, Florence Pugh will be seen again as Princess Irulan, while Rebecca Ferguson will return to the role of Lady Jessica. In addition, Anya Taylor-Joy will also be present as Alia Atreides. Irulan’s position is particularly important because her marriage to Paul was established as a political arrangement in Dune: Part Two. As a member of the former imperial family, she occupies a complicated position within Paul’s new regime.

Other Returning and New Characters

Actors like Javier Bardem will play Stilgar, and Jason Momoa is supposed to play Duncan Idaho/Hayt. Robert Pattinson will become Scytale. In addition, according to the official cast, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa will play Leto II, and Ida Brooke will play Ghanima. The appearance of these characters points toward a story that extends beyond Paul’s individual journey. Family succession, political manipulation, and the consequences of earlier relationships are likely to become increasingly important.

3. How Will Dune: Part Three Differ From the Previous Movies?

A More Political and Character-Driven Story

While in the previous two movies, the main character Paul undergoes a transformation from the heir of House Atreides to a Fremen leader and Emperor, the new one takes place after the transformation. The plot of Dune: Part Three focuses more on conspiracy, political resistance, betrayal, and the price of Paul’s reign. That is why the dialogues, political maneuvering, personal relations, and inner conflict have more chances to prevail in the movie.

New Challenges for the Fremen and the Imperium

Paul’s rise has changed the relationship between the Fremen and the wider Imperium. The Fremen are not only struggling for their survival on Arrakis anymore; they are now deeply entangled with Paul’s political and spiritual strength. This gives rise to new conflicts. While controlling a growing empire requires a certain approach, leading a revolution in the desert involves another way of thinking. Thus, the movie can depict how the revolutionary movement changes after becoming part of the government.

A Different Approach to Action and Conflict

Action will still be an important part of the Dune universe, but the conflict in the third film is expected to involve more than conventional warfare. The official storyline is based on conspiracy and dangers coming from within Paul’s environment.

As a consequence, risks may appear not only due to war actions but also because of political manipulations, espionage, treason, and pre-planned attacks. This approach allows the film to be different from the battle scenes in Dune: Part Two.

4. What Could Dune: Part Three Mean for Paul’s Story?

The Cost of Becoming a Powerful Leader

The struggle of Paul’s life always included the confrontation of his choices with the things happening beyond his control. However, by the time the third film begins, Paul already possesses the political power that was necessary to him for his survival before.

The official synopsis directly frames the story around the consequences of Paul’s reign. This makes the third movie less about whether Paul can become Emperor and more about what happens after he reaches the position he fought to obtain.

The Conflict Between Destiny and Free Will

Paul’s visions of the future have shaped many of his decisions from the start of the story. The role of prophecy, prediction, and decision-making in relation to each other becomes especially important in Dune: Part Three because Paul already realizes that he can create consequences beyond his control.

The story can therefore continue one of the central themes of the Dune series: whether seeing possible futures gives someone greater control over events or creates another form of limitation.

Paul’s Vision of the Future

The official synopsis states that Paul is haunted by visions of imperial collapse while facing a conspiracy surrounding his rule. His ability to perceive possible futures therefore remains closely connected to the main conflict. Rather than simply showing Paul as an all-powerful Emperor, the film can present a character who has extraordinary knowledge but still cannot completely control what happens around him. This creates a more complicated final stage for his story.

5. Conclusion

Dune: Part Three will explore a new stage of Paul’s life, set nearly two decades after he becomes Emperor. The plot will revolve around the consequences of his ascent to power, politics, relationships, and dangers to his reign.

The movie is expected to be released on December 18, 2026. Denis Villeneuve will continue in his position as the director, while many actors will return from previous films. Instead of concentrating only on the struggle for Arrakis, the film will concentrate on Paul’s power, relationships, visions, and past decisions.
